MIGRAIN: Audience Theory 2

  1) Social learning theory has been criticised for simplifying the causes of violence in society. Do you think the media is responsible for anti-social behaviour and violence? The social learning theory is a theodicy that suggests people learn from one another, whether it be through observation, imitation and modelling; media is an example of how people can use these skills to learn. For example, one type of media texts are video games, whereby some of them encourage violence by creating violence-oriented games. In my opinion, I do believe that media is responsible for anti-social behaviour and violence, to an extent. The reason I believe this is because there have been many social experiments and news reports of people of all ages imitating behaviour they have witnessed through media texts. An example of this is the murder of two-year-old, James Bulger. He was abducted, tortured and murdered by two ten-year-old boys, Robert Thompson and Jon Venables. Bulger was l...

Hypodermic needle model 1) Read this  Mail Online article about the effects of  video games . How does this article link to the hypodermic needle model? The hypodermic needle suggests the media injects information into the audience like a hypodermic needle and therefore can have a dangerous effect on us. This article is a prime example of the hypodermic needle theory as it convinces the reader that people who constantly play violent video games "assume the world was hostile and react aggressively". The reason why this is classed as the hypodermic needle is because the media text is using so called facts and figures to portray violent video games such as 'Call of Duty' and 'Condemned 2' to have an aggressive and negative effect on people. The way in which they do this is by conducting an experiment whereby 70 French university students where either asked to play a violent or non-violent game for 20 minutes a day, during an allocated time period of thre...

I would say I am struggler and an aspirer. this is because I am unorganised and leave my work to the very last minute. I would say I am an aspirer because I like having nice clothes and materialistic things.

MIGRAIN October assessment learner response

1) Type up your feedback in  full  (you don't need to write the mark and grade if you want to keep this confidential). WWW; Q2 and Q4 show your potential in media. You understand the texts and some of the theory. If you can apply this consistently, you will make real progress.  EBI; Some major concerns. Mixing up denotation and connotation is a fatal mistake in media. You clearly need to urgently revise/learn genre. For 20 mark questions, you need much more depth... a short essay rather than 3 paragraphs. 2) Read the  mark scheme for this assessment  carefully. Identify at least  one  potential point that you missed out on for each question in the assessment. Question 1 - Todorov: disequilibrium suggested by gun; character eye line looking off-screen suggests danger or threat; tagline references ‘survival’; no hint of new equilibrium. Question 2 -  Similarities: urban setting; single (male) character dressed for urban environment; si...

Blog feedback and learner response

WWW: This is a mixed picture – your reception theory analysis for the RBK advert is excellent and shows great potential for Media. The text you chose as a second advert analysis for reception theory is also very interesting (different to ‘reading an image’ but it works here). You show you understand reception theory which is great… but unfortunately other work is missing. EBI: Firstly, you are missing a key piece of work: the icon/index/symbol work ( https://mediamacguffin12.blogspot.co.uk/2017/09/migrain-semiotics-icon-index-symbol.html  ). It’s so vital that you keep up with the workload and complete work on time – if you are completing the expected five hours’ of media homework a week you will easily keep on top of the work for both sides of the course but I don’t think that’s the case currently (at least not consistently). Secondly, not all your work is at the same level as your RBK reception theory analysis. Even the second advert for reception theory could have offe...
