Magazine practical task evaluation

Image
1) Save your finished Photoshop magazine cover as a JPEG image and upload it to your evaluation blogpost. 2) Write an evaluation of your work: have you succeeded in your brief to create a new, original edition of an existing magazine? I do believe I have successfully created a magazine cover which is similar to the original vogue magazines; this is because I spent time researching all the aspects that make up the vogue magazine and tried to incorporate most of them into my magazine cover.  3) Put your cover alongside a couple of genuine covers of your chosen magazine. How professional is your work alongside genuine examples? Compared to these genuine covers, my central image isn’t as professional because it wasn’t taken with studio lighting. However, I believe that the title ‘Vogue’ looks very professional and the cover lines are not too far off from what they look they on the actual magazine.  4) What is the strongest...

Magazine practical task PLANNING

1) Plan your main flash - this is the main cover story that links to your central image.   The main story line to my magazine is the model who is a successful beauty blogger and she exposes all her secrets on what is is like to be in that line of business and her top beauty tips for clear skin. 2) Plan the image you will need for the cover - model, costume, make-up, lighting etc. At this point, simply describe the image you need to capture. For the central image, my model will pose for a candid photo where she is smiling carelessly; she will face away from the camera and her hand will be in her hair. Her makeup will be done as she is a beauty blogger with a red lipstick to match the red and white theme of my magazine.  3) Write the cover lines and any additional text you need for your magazine cover. " candid Hafsa spills on what it is like to be a beauty blogger " " 10 ways to make your skin glow naturally " " + P...

Magazine practical task RESEARCH

Image
1) Use your lesson notes on magazine genres and conventions to view a range of potential magazine covers.  Create a shortlist of three potential magazines and embed an example front cover from each one. VOGUE GQ EMPIRE 2) Select your chosen magazine to create a new edition for and explain the thinking behind your choice. The magazine i have chosen to re-create is cosmopolitan; the reason being is because it ticks all the boxes in terms of what a typical well-selling magazine looks like.  3) Find three different front covers for your chosen magazine and embed them in your blog post. Analyse the fonts, colours and typical design. What is the language or writing style? How are the cover lines presented? You need to become an expert in the design and construction of this magazine and its branding. With the colour scheme, all three have specific colours that are incorporated throughout the magazine; for...

Advertising: Gauntlett - Media, Gender and Identity reading and questions

Read  this extract from Media, Gender and Identity by David Gauntlett . This is another university-level piece of academic writing so it will be challenging - but there are some fascinating ideas here regarding the changing representation of men and women in the media. If you can't access David Gauntlett's website, the text is  also available here . 1) What examples does Gauntlett provide of the "decline of tradition"? How can we link our advertising CSPs (Score hair cream and Maybelline 'That Boss Life') to this idea? The traditional role of women as housewives or low-status workers has been overtaken by 'girl power' icons (spice girls). Score portrays the more patriarchal role, the traditional role of a man dominating the women or owning her by attraction has been thrown out by modern day representations of gender in the Maybelline advert. Manny Gutierrez, is the modern representation of how gender identity in society has changed and become more acc...

Advertising: Maybelline case study and wider reading

Work through the following tasks to make sure you're an expert on the Maybelline CSP and particularly the wider social and cultural context. Use your notes from class to write about the connotations and representations created by the following technical and audio codes. Write at least a paragraph on each: 1.  Narrative & genre: narrative theory and sub-genre Sub-genre: Romance (man and women starring in the advert) Jumping on the bed (defies the traditional scenes of sex) 2. Cinematography: camera shots and movement Close up of an eye and mascara to advertise the product Conventions of beauty blogging advertising because fans would be used to seeing them on a screen as that is their daily job 3.  Mise-en-scene: costume & props Colour scheme: mainly gold – prestigious, simplistic, luxury. Big change in terms of scenery and clothing after they put on the mascara Has a lot of luggage at the beginning which could connote they are going to a lot...

Score hair cream advert Answer the following questions to ensure you have a comprehensive textual analysis of the Score hair cream advert: 1) What year was the advert produced and why is the historical context important? The year that the advert was  produced in was 1967; its historical context is important because it is important we understand how gender roles and sexuality has adapted and slowly changed over the years up until the 21st century.  1967 can be seen as a period of change in the UK with legislation on (and changing attitudes to) the role of women – and men – in society. Produced in the year of decriminalisation of homosexuality and three years before the 1970 Equal Pay Act, the representation of gender could be read as signalling more anxiety than might first appear. 2) Analyse the mise-en-scene in the advert (CLAMPS): how is costume, make-up and placement of models constructed to show male dominance? Costumes: As you can see from the image, the m...
